Corn Marigold

Sandringham Flower Show on July 29th 2009 turned out to become a truely memorable day. Not only was my Saltmarsh Garden presented with a Gold Award but was also judged to be Best In Show of the Courtyard Gardens. The judges Chris Beardshaw and Alan Mason said it was 'fabulous' with a great sense of place and appropriate planting. A huge thankyou goes to Edgefield Nurseries who grew and provided the plants for me and also transported them to Sandringham. They also won their own Large Gold Award for their display in the Horticultural Tent.

The garden was designed to create the atmosphere and ambiance of the saltmarsh as found along the North Norfolk Coast, in places such as Blakeney, Morston, Stiffkey, Wells, Holkham, the Burnhams, Brancaster and Titchwell. I included a pine tree, for a mysterious, dark corner reminiscent of the pines at Wells and Holkham and a sand dune, often found at the back of the beach. The majority of the garden depicted the saltmarsh proper, with French lavender, artemisia, santolina, thrift and dwarf curry plant woven into patterns of creeks and highs and lows in the marsh. With sedum in the gravel and sea kale in the shingle bank wall, the Norfolk coast in miniature transported judges and the public alike to a well-loved environment and all in such a small space, only 5m by 4m.

I hope you enjoy the photographs.
